"Die Hochhausspringerin by Julia von Lucadou
    Wednesday, January 29, 7 pm
Literary conversation with the literary expert Sylvia Schwab

Julia von Lucadou’s debut novel “Die Hochhausspringerin“ (The Skyscraper Jumper) received rave reviews upon its publication in 2018. It is set in a global megacity, a glossy world in which the border between welfare and surveillance has long dissolved. Two women are in competition: the professional athlete Riva refuses to continue functioning perfectly; the psychologist Hitomi is charged with leading Riva back onto her hyper-efficient path.
What makes “Die Hochhausspringerin” so impressive is the accuracy with which it describes a world which is optimized, but inhuman for that very reason. A modern variation on George Orwell’s “1984”. Read the book in parallel with the exhibition and reflect your impressions over a glass of wine with Sylvia Schwab.

Metamorphoses: Of the animal in humans and the human in animals
A musical and literary evening with Helge Heynold (text) and Gregor Praml (double bass / loop station)

Even in antiquity, Apuleius wrote about the transformation of a man into a “golden ass”. As a donkey with human reason, this creature must realize how many different relationships people enter into, amongst each other and even with donkeys. The first European collection of fairy-tales, Il Pentamerone by Giambattista Basile, is also  about animals and humans, about the animal inside every human and the human inside the animal – as would also be the case later, in the tales of the Brothers Grimm. Helge Heynold reads stories about transformations and incorporations, and the Frankfurt-based musician Gregor Praml illustrates them with a double bass and a loop station. A resounding reading.

The body is the manner in which persons exist in time and space. Through knowledge, emotion, technology and spirituality, they try to transcend the body. Juul Kraijer creates mixed beings, draws metamorphoses, visualizes a unity of man and nature which makes physical boundaries fluid, inside and out, without, however, allowing humans to escape their bodies.

    Between Body and Physique
    Wednesday, March 25, 7 pm

A philosophical evening with Professor Dr. Dr. Thomas Fuchs, holder of the Karl Jaspers Chair for the Philosophical Foundations of Psychiatry, University of Heidelberg

The juxtaposition of “being a body” and “having a physique” is the point of departure for a lecture by Thomas Fuchs: on the one hand, the body we experience and feel forms our primary self; at the same time it represents the medium of our relations with the world. On the other hand, we can view our body as an object, we can observe it, examine it, use it, treat it or change it. Thus, our everyday experience continuously veers between the poles of “being a body” and “having a physique”. During our present times, however, there are several tendencies which might be described as a “disappearance of the body”. On the one hand, there is the notion that the subject or consciousness is not even housed within the body, but only in the brain. On the other hand, modern forms of staging the body focus less and less on the physicality we actually feel; this is aided by the increasing prevalence of virtual communication. How and where can we find our way back to our own physicality?

Victoria Söntgen (dance) and Michael Weber (recitation) go in search of a second skin

What is under our surface? Do we lack a core, like the onion? Can we get under each other’s skin if we just rub up against one another hard enough? Do we tear away boundaries by exchanging rough words?
She: “You have a thick skin!” He: “I feel as if someone had skinned me alive.” Inspired by Juul Kraijer’s body worlds, Victoria Söntgen and Michael Weber have developed a performance in which the audience can experience up close how the two of them shed lawyers, patting each other down, how they collide and enter into a dialogue with our largest organ: our skin.

“Die Vegetarierin is a masterwork“ - Julia Encke, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung

The novel The Vegetarian (thus the title of the English translation) by the South Korean Han Kang tells the strangely disturbing tale of a woman who – in the opinion of her husband – could hardly be more average. Until she decides to become a vegetarian, which, in South Korea, a country of strict social norms, amounts to a small revolution. “I had a dream” – is the protagonist’s vague reason for her behaviour, which becomes increasingly strange as she bids the world farewell, retreating into her own world. A bestseller about a highly sensitive person who loses the ability to be human.
Read the novel in parallel with the exhibition and reflect your impressions with others over a glass of wine during our BuchBar event.
